ABOUT ME

Nicola Murungi

I have also been a competitive swimmer since I was 6 years old. As I got older, I noticed a big race disparity at the various swimming competitions I attended. This is from the local ones, all the way up to the regionals and Junior Olympics. I believe that basic swimming ability is a life skill that everyone should have.

My goal is to increase diversity in the swimming arena by providing access and opportunity through swimming lessons, to make communities safer and save lives. I want to make sure children are comfortable in the water. This is why I formed Kru-Swimming. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or currently looking to take your skill set to the next level, there’s always more room for improvement. I offer a wide variety of classes built to suit every need and level. Jump in with me and learn how to have memorable fun safely.

WHY KRU-SWIMMING

As far back as the 18th century, the Kru people from West Africa were known for their skills as strong swimmers. In fact, back then, Africans' swimming skills were highly valued and proved very useful to those who enslaved them. They were used as divers salvaging goods from wrecked ships, harvesting pearls, and even as lifeguards.

Ironically, by the late 20th century, African Americans were deliberately prevented from swimming in public pools. This has led to the fear of swimming or the lack of interest in swimming in communities of color.

I would like to play my part in instilling the life skill of swimming and bringing back this pride to communities of color.
